Sidebar menu

This page contains instructions for adding and editing a sidebar menu, i.e., a menu that appears as a block on a page rather than in the main menu structure.

Overview

Sidebar menus can be used on pages if navigation is needed beyond what is available via the main site menu structure.

Sidebar menus are normally vertical, and provide a list of links to pages that contain more information about the topic on the page where the menu appears.

Detailed steps

You must have editor or administrator privileges on the site to create a menu.

  • When logged in, from the menu at the top (the administration men), choose "Structure", then Menus.
  • Click on the blue "+Add menu" button.
  • Fill in the title box with the name of the new sidebar menu. You can leave the Administrative Summary blank, or enter a description of where you expect to use the menu. Save.
  • Populate the new menu per the following steps.

  • If your side menu needs submenus, edit the menu:C
  • Click on the blue "+Add link" button.
  • Fill in the Menu link title with the submenu name.
  • In the link box, enter "<nolink>".
  • In the ASU Brand menu link type pulldown, choose "Heading - starts a column"
  • Click on the blue Save button at the bottom.

To add links to pages, edit the menu:

  • Click on the blue "+Add link" button.
  • Enter the name of the link in the Menu link title.
  • In the Link box, enter the URL of the page you are linking to. If the page is not external, you should find it by typing a word or two of the page title, so that you get a node on the current site.
  • In the Parent link pulldown, choose the group name, if any, that the link should be listed in. If there are no groups in this sidebar menu, choose the name of the sidebar menu.
  • Click on the blue Save button.

When you are done adding links, click on the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the Edit menu page.

When editing a menu, you can drag menu items using the + at the left of the menu title.

When done re-organizing, click on the blue Save button at the bottom of the Edit menu page.

On the page where you want the menu, from the +Create custom block menu, choose  sidebar menu:

  • If you want the menu to have a title, you can use the Block admin title and click in the Display title box. The title will be above the menu in Heading 2. For a Heading 3 title, do not check the Display title, but enter your title in the "Title"  box.
  • From the Root pull-down, select your menu. Its name will be enclosed in angle brackets, e.g. ,<Test Side Bar Menus>.
  • Click on Add block.
