Add link or button

Buttons (also called CTAs or "calls to action") and links are used to allow viewers to find related content. This page includes both standards and methods.

Link text

  1. Highlight the test that you want to link from. It should be text that makes it clear what the viewer will find when they click on the link. Avoid terms such as "click here".
  2. Click on the link icon in the text editor.
    1. If you are linking to a page on the same site your page is on, start typing the title, or words in the title, of the page you want to link to. You should see options offered below the link box. Select the desired page.
    2. If you are linking to a page on an another site, enter the full URL of that page.

The default is to stay on the same page, and you should not change this. ASU standards state that you should not open links on new tabs or browser pages, whether or not the links go to external sites.

Add button (CTA)

There should no more than one gold button on a page. A button in the hero counts as a button on the page. If you want additional buttons, use maroon or black.

Button text should invite the person to take an action, e.g. "View form", "Register", "Update profile". Don't just use "Form" or "Profile".

  1. For a button that is created through a CTA field in a custom block:
    1. Fill in the URL. If the page you are linking to is on the same site, you can find it by typing words in the page title. You should see options offer below the URL box. Select the desired page.
    2. Enter link text, remembering to make it an action.
    3. Do not change target.
    4. Select style or color.
  2. To create a button within a text block:
    1. Place your cursor where you want the button and click on the button icon from the text editor. It looks like a black dash.
    2. Choose color from the Style pull-down.
    3. Choose size. Default is usually fine, but sometimes you may want "small".
    4. Enter button text, remembering to make it an action.
    5. In the URL box, over the top of the #, type or copy the URL of the target page.

To find the URL, on a different tab or browser window, navigate to the target page. Copy the URL, then paste it in the button's URL box.

If the target page is on the same site as the page that will have the button, remove the portion of the URL that identifies the site (the domain). Leave the slash that follows the domain. An example internal URL on the ASURA public site might be "/board-directors-meeting-minutes".
